Objective: Enhance the student-parent experience at Cal.
Research Methods: Semi-structured interviews and surveys. I was given five weeks with a team of four to propose potential solutions that address student-parents' pain points. Since financial resources was not a bearing issue, semi-structured interviews were chosen to gain a rich, deep, and complex view of our users' experiences. Once we reached saturation, qualitative coding (e.g., standardization, affinity diagrams, 2x2 matrices, etc.) were used to identify four main issues. Afterwards, we dispersed surveys to gauge the significance of our findings.
Ux research for labor2day
Understand the needs and concerns of day laborers while they look for employment.
- Uncover the apprehensions and issues that employers face while looking to hire day laborers
- Pinpoint and improve Labor2Day's niche.
Research Methods: Field observations, semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and competitive analysis.
Field Observations: Unobtrusive observations of potential users' current processes for seeking employment was done to gain clearer insights of existing pain points, expanding Labor2Day's solution based platform.
- Semi-Structured Interviews: Interviews were chosen to obtain (in depth) the users' experiences between day laborers and employers, specifically their current process for seeking employment and hiring, existing pain points, and potential solutions.
- Focus Groups: Since the majority of day laborers are undocumented, they would most likely feel uncomfortable with being asked questions about their current employment experiences. Focus groups along with a Spanish speaking native/co-interviewer were chosen to help relieve pressure off of individuals and further understand users' current attitudes, beliefs, experiences, feelings, and reactions.
- Competitive Analysis: Competitive analysis of existing competitors was chosen to understand their strengths and weaknesses in relation to Labor2Day, retrieving insight into potential niches.
Challenges: Previous attempts to have semi-structured interviews with Day Laborers were unsuccessful due to language and cultural barriers as well as users' documentation concerns. Contacted a fellow translator and brought her up to speed with the interview protocol. We decided to go in the field and initiate interviews with participants. As we started talking to a Day Laborer, six others joined around us to take part in the conversation. The translator was unsure what to do since we planned on having one-to-one interviews. Decided to keep to the questions, while trying to have everyone give their opinion. For example, one participant kept answering questions first, priming others' responses. To counteract this, I encouraged the translator to call out other participants to respond first.
Results: Field observations educated Labor2Day of potential users' current pain points that no other company was addressing. Semi-structured interviews teased out users' conscious reasoning for choosing particular platforms, which became part of the framework for the competitive analysis. Focus groups identified a large concern amongst potential users, initiating Labor2Day's platform to support their sense of community. Quantified competitors level of trustworthiness, etc., which unveiled a niche for Labor2Day.
